Garrett Bradley in the News, 2009
Representative Bradley Votes to Abolish Suffolk County Holidays Recently the House of Representatives voted on an amendment to a supplemental budget that would eliminate two paid holidays for municipal and state workers in Suffolk County. Representative Garrett J. Bradley (D-Hingham) voted to eliminate both of these paid holidays but was unsuccessful in that attempt as the vote ended in a rarely seen tie. The proposal is relative to the state paid holidays of Evacuation Day (March 17) and Bunker Hill Day (June 17). The Massachusetts Taxpayers Foundation recently released a study claiming it costs the state $5 million to pay public employees on each day off. “While I recognize the historical significance of both holidays, I believe there are better ways to observe these occasions than simply giving a select group of state and municipal employees the day off,” said Bradley. “It is inappropriate to shut down all state and municipal offices in Suffolk County for a pair of holidays that do not extend to workers in the private sector.” Representative Bradley's State House and district offices were staffed on June 17. February 12, 2009 Rep.Bradley promoted to House leadership post by Speaker DeLeo (State House, Boston) – Rep. Garrett J. Bradley, D-Hingham, has been promoted to a House leadership position for the 2009-2010 legislative session by newly elected Speaker Robert A. DeLeo, D-Winthrop. Rep. Bradley was appointed to serve as Chairman of the First Division of the House. As Chairman, Rep. Bradley will report directly to the House Speaker, tracking all legislation and informing members of the First Division of upcoming votes on the agenda, and shepherding through legislative and budgetary proposals. In addition, Chairman Bradley will assist the Speaker with various policy issues that affect the Commonwealth. “I am grateful for the confidence that Speaker DeLeo has expressed in my leadership abilities, and look forward to working as a member of his team to pass legislation that will improve the lives of every citizen of the Commonwealth,” said Chairman Bradley. “This new leadership role may also allow me to better serve the residents of the Third Plymouth District,” he added. Rep. Bradley most recently served as House Chairman of the Joint Committee on Election Laws. He previously served as Vice-Chairman of the Judiciary Committee and as a member of the Committee on Government Regulation and the Committee on Public Service. Rep. Bradley has served the Third Plymouth District since first being elected in 2000. The district comprises the towns of Cohasset, Hingham and Hull, and Precinct 3 in Scituate. |
