Hingham Harbor Dredging Project to Begin in the Fall

Bradley and Hedlund thankful to thePatrick Administration for recognizing its importance

January 28, 2009

Boston- Representative Garrett J. Bradley and Senator Robert L. Hedlund are pleased to announce that Governor Patrick has set aside funds though the Environmental Bond bill to dredge Hingham Harbor.  The project was included in last sessions Environmental Bond bill at the urging of Bradley and Hedlund.

After a series of meetings with the legislators, the Patrick Administration and the town of Hingham, the project will start in the fall of 2009.  The Commonwealth has committed to fund 75% of the project and the town of Hingham is responsible for the remaining 25 percent.  The project is being overseen by the town of Hingham, the Department of Conservation and Recreation, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

“This is great news for the town of Hingham,” said Representative Bradley.  “I am thankful that Governor Patrick has recognized the importance of our harbor and his willingness to move forward with this project. In addition, the money allotted for this project is from the capital budget rather than the general fund which means the costs can be spread out over a longer period of time, which is important in this economic climate.”

“The town of Hingham has a long and proud maritime history and its important that we preserve our access to the water,” Senator Hedlund said. “It is important during these economic times that we ensure our limited resources are being used on projects that will have broad impact and reflect the priorities of our communities. I am grateful that Gov. Patrick has recognized the importance of this project to the town of Hingham.”

Chairman of the Board of Selectmen John Riley said “It is gratifying to hear that we will receive adequate funds to dredge the Harbor.  Our recent purchase of property directly on the waterfront and the extensive improvements that have been made in the Downtown area will be complemented by a harbor that welcomes boaters to the town.  We thank Sen. Hedlund and Rep. Bradley for their invaluable assistance.”

The town of Hingham is expected to put the project out to bid in June and be completed between October and January of 2010.
