Rep. Bradley, Sen. Hedlund, Congressman Keating:  $330,000 Grant for Hull Senior Center

January 20, 2011

(Boston) – Representative Garrett J. Bradley, D-Hingham, Senator Robert L. Hedlund, R-Weymouth, and Congressman William Keating, D-Quincy, today announced that the Town of Hull has been awarded a $330,160 Community Development Block Grant to renovate the Anne M. Scully Senior Center.  The grant, awarded by the state Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD), is funded by the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

Rep. Bradley said, “This project will enable the Senior Center to better serve the more than 1,800 senior citizens who live in the Town of Hull.  It will assist the staff and volunteers in providing programs and services for this growing population of residents, some of whom are disabled and depend upon the Center for hot meals and activities.  I wish to thank the Patrick Administration and Secretary Greg Bialecki for their assistance in securing this grant for the Town.”

“Senior centers are an important resource for many families on the South Shore and it is imperative that they are properly preserved,” said Senator Hedlund.  “These funds, allotted through DHCD, will help ensure the maintenance of the Anne M. Scully Senior Center in Hull.”

In a letter addressed to Mr. Domenic Sestito, Chairman of the Hull Board of Selectmen, Undersecretary of Housing and Community Development Tina Brooks congratulated the town on its successful application, and stated that she looked forward to working with local officials to address the Town of Hull’s community development needs.

Town Manager Philip E. Lemnios said, “The Town is grateful for Representative Bradley's and Senator Hedlund's perseverance and advocacy on behalf of Hull's Seniors.  This grant will allow the Town to provide a Center worthy of the members of our community who have given so much over their lifetime to Hull and the Commonwealth."

The project will include site improvements to construct four new handicapped parking spaces suitable for the Center’s three vans, a handicapped compliant walkway to a rear ramp and accessible sidewalk curb cuts to the entrance.  Other site work includes signage, landscaping, and HVAC utility relocation.  The site work is designed to create a seamless accessible walkway into the Center, which does not now exist.  Among the many benefits will be new handrails, fixtures, energy-efficient appliances, and accessible bathrooms.  Kitchen improvements will benefit the Meals-on-Wheels Program. The project is expected to take 12 months to complete.
