Bradley January 15, 2008 Legislators Announce Scituate and Marshfield Senior Grants State Representatives Frank Hynes and Garrett Bradley and State Senator Robert Hedlund are pleased to announce that the Executive Office of Elder Affairs will award grants to Councils on Aging across the Commonwealth. These annual formula grants are calculated based upon a city or town’s senior population or number of over age 60 residents multiplied by $6.50 per senior. Rep. Hynes stated, “This state grant program is critically important to our Councils on Aging to provide for supportive programs for seniors. Councils do a great job, with very minimal funds, providing creative social and educational programs for our seniors, programs which for many seniors, are critical to their physical and emotional health. Additionally, staff are available to counsel seniors who are in need of individual counseling on a variety of issues.” “We continue to see a significant change in the role senior centers play in our communities,” said Sen. Hedlund. “As our population grays, I will continue to support increased state funding for the centers and their programs.” The Marshfield Council on Aging will receive $21,112, which will fund part time staff to provide social services, coordinate volunteer project s, and provide for good nutritional activities. The $23,381 awarded the Scituate Council on Aging will assist in underwriting an arthritis/exercise program and will provide for much needed medical transportation for seniors. A portion of this funding will be used to subsidize an outreach/activity coordinator. Rep. Bradley stated, “I am thankful that Governor Patrick has set aside funds for local Councils on Aging and that he recognizes their importance. I have seen first hand the work they do and the assistance they provide to seniors. I am pleased that this money will be put to good use.”
